Did anybody hear we are in an economic downturn? I am beyond disappointed at the Oilton City Council, because they forgot to read the memo. First they install bathrooms at the city park. I don't think, but am not sure that the project went out to bid, but instead went to a local guy. That's fine-if there is a reason for it, like an emergency or lack of vendors. In todays cash strapped world wouldn't it be better to get the best price? I wasn't privvy to all of the cost nor negotiations - I need to ask a councilman or our city clerk, but I am just saying why would this not be bid? There are a bunch of construction folks in the area. Even if it was totally legitimate - it reeks of impropriety.
On the surface bathrooms sound like a good thing. I mean hey - everybody would like to use the bathroom when they need to, right? Well wrong. They basically put them in for one day a year. If you happen to visit for Old Timers Day - you will be able to use the bathrooms, otherwise they are locked. What a deal - people who aren't paying tax dollars are able to be comfortable. You can go to City Hall and get the key, if say you want to hold a company picnic at the park, but once again that's really awesome for the folks who don't live here and pay their tax dollars here. What if my child has to go to the bathroom while we are at the park on a Saturday afternoon - well we still have to load up and go home, but hey I am paying for them so what the he!!.
I understand they are worried about vandalism - but if your that worried, why put the damned things in. Why can't the OPD just lock them up in the evenings - say 8pm in the summer and 6 in the winter months (this is Oklahoma and it's warm enough to play in the park year round). Would that not be a viable solution for all concerned? The OPWA guys can come around in the morning and clean (I assume they are doing it, somebody has to. Maybe the Mayor is going to volunteer for that) and unlock them. Of course if they are only used one day a year-the cleaning is pretty easy. I wonder if the council thought about that?
Now I hear they are planning on making the rest of the park match the bathrooms!!! You gotta be kidding me. I have no trouble spending money on the park - don't get me wrong. I am an advocate for doing so, but we have to prioritize things. I mean hey the Police and Fire Depts both took budget cuts, so we can have a canopy that matches our bathrooms? Have you driven any of the streets in Oilton, I think I ran over a VW bug in the bottom of a chughole on my way to main street. They are deplorable. I guess the mayor and the councilmen must drive on streets paved better than the rest of the town, cuz they don't notice the shape they are in.
It gets better though. They are discussing wireless cameras around town, one of them at the park. I guess they want to waste some more money. I have several issues with cameras around town. Some people might say they would help curb vandalism, but how much vandalism is there in Oilton. How many complaints have been filed at the police dept. I read the paper every week - very few. Somebody getting mud on the new bathroom walls, when that's all that's there after construction does not count as vandalism. I have a real issue with cameras that are accessible by Joe Blow trained on my kids at the park - can we all say pedophile? Sure would make it easy to snatch a kid wouldn't it? I don't want one that shows my coming and goings at my business, can we say easier to plan a robbery. What if people can login and see that the police officers are in city hall or the police dept? Wow - that's when I want to rob Jiffy Trip. What is the real logic or reason for this? Does somebody just think they can watch their new bathrooms in all of their glory? If that's the case I say get a lawn chair - it will cost us citizens much less.

Wow - I see they are working at the park again. The old canopy is being replaced. What was wrong with it? I just saw a concrete truck dumping cement to replace the floor of the old one. Why are we spending this money? The old one may not have been as pretty as the new one will be, but it was quite functional. Not to mention, the old one had a metal roof that was never going to have to be replaced. I believe the new bathrooms have shingles - UPKEEP PEOPLE!! Metal roofs last forever. Our council and the waste of our tax dollars is killin' me. It's bad enough the idiots in Washington spend out dollars like we have an unlimited supply, but now our local council is trying to do the same. Am I the only one that's ticked off?

OK - just to clarify something after speaking to a council member yesterday. The labor in the park was provided by the local guy for free. Call me a pessimist, but I wonder what he is getting out of it. He has a crew up there working, and that costs him money. If he is doing it for all of the right reasons, then kudos to him.
As for the rest of the park - I am ashamed to report the dollar figure that was given to me. I was told the city is purchasing all of the materials, and it is costing us $40,000. Do you realize how much asphalt that would buy? What about equipment for our volunteer fire fighters, or our police dept? I don't understand these expenditures - especially considering the average citizen will never be able to use those pretty bathrooms.

Aren't the new bathrooms and covered pinic areas beautiful. I mean they really are. Nobody can argue with that and they are something to be proud of. Too bad the same can't be said for the streets.
The park is important but there are other things that are more important right now. Lets get our priorities in line here folks.
Is anybody else curious as to why things happen this way. I asked a few and still haven't got an answer why the park is ahead of streets and utilities and other things that I've heard are needed. What about the sewer lagoon trouble I've heard about. What about the water leaks and paying the land owner so much per month for the water. There are other questions why all this money is being spent at the park while money is tight and other things are needing done. This is only things I know about. Who knows what else is being left alone so we can have a bathroom that will be locked most of the time plus I heard the city is wanting to spend thousands on cameras for the park.

The more I think about this the more I wonder what the city is thinking. I have asked and nobody has said why the park is more important than the streets. I challenge anybody to drive any street in town and not wonder the same thing. The new street at the school is nice and was needed but so are the other streets but we still spend money on replacing a covered picnic area with another roof that won't do anything the old one didnt. The bathrooms are something that could be built after the streets are fixed.
I also heard that the water well owner gets paid per gallon of water the city uses. Why is the leak on main street not fixed? If this is from the citys line aren't we just watching money flow down the street? I heard about the leak and sure enough I saw water running to the highway from in front of the church on main street. Someone needs to look into this if its costing us buying water. The money saved may can be used to build more bathrooms that are locked.

I just watched Tulsa mayor on tv talk about city funds and how they are spent. I know Oilton is not Tulsa but city governments have a lot in common. She said the important things are (quote) public safety, roads and education (unquote). She never mentioned bathrooms, picnic areas or even parks.
I happen to agree.

The bathrooms and the shelter area look really nice. What is the cost so far? Did the guy building them give the city the same deal as he gave the school? How much did the school pay?

The baseball field looks great, but the arch doesn't seem to be squared to the field. Why did they cover the fence next to the dugout with metal?

I don't know if true but after hearing more about the deal the city got on the new bath room at the park I still do not see why spending any money there right now is a good idea. If this is what determines what the city spends money on we should find a road contractor instead of a building contractor to give us a deal. This sounds like my wife. I love her but she is a sucker for sales and thinks because something is on sale she should buy it whether we have the money or need it to start with. Maybe she will run for city council. Sounds like she will fit right in.
Its been mentioned too that even if the city got a good deal on the bathroom was it put up for bid? I dont know the law on this but I think there is 1.

I heard the city is getting a paving machine so maybe the streets will get fixed sometime. We can only hope. I assume that while the look for equipment continues, we can squander money on projects like public bathrooms that I've been told will remain locked for the most part. Maybe they are not for use as much as they are a shrine to the mayor and city council for a look what I did type thing. Buildings are more noticable than streets so when we drive by we can see them if we are not busy dodging craters in the street. I not going to say anything about the sewer needing fixed and what I've heard that is going to cost and the payment for water use when we should have our own well and the list goes on and on. Maybe the city has enough money to do all these things and not be put in a money crisis but I doubt it. My worries maybe for nothing but if the city is fined for pollution violations standards for the sewer and water royalty owners get paid for water use and the streets are impassable and the old utility lines leak and when all these things happen, we can set at the park and say what **** fine bathrooms we got. Come on mayor and city council lets get our priorities in line. I have an idea. Fix the streets utilities and sewer. Get our own water source and then I won't complain to do almost anything at the park.
