I have been fuming about a few things over the last month or so - and all of them have to do with our local city government. I won't hit upon all of them in this post - it would take too long. I will only hit the high points - and see if somebody else out there agrees. I read the newspaper today (finally) - and I saw some disturbing things in it. First I read that the citizens comments portion of the city council agenda is gone? I was aggravated when last month I read about the meeting, and saw that a local citizen spoke during the meeting, seems like he was giving his opinion on every item of the agenda. The city council was not in control of the meeting. Where was the mayor - isn't he supposed to run the meeting? The purpose of the agenda is for the council to discuss the items on it. Citizens in attendance aren't supposed to take part in those discussions, unless the council has requested they appear to give information that is needed for the council to make decisions. Citizens had a place on the agenda to discuss what was on their minds. This month - the place that citizens should be given an opportunity to speak - is gone! Then I read that you have to fill out a form to request documents That alone did not bother me, by filling out the form, you are guaranteed to convey your needs to the proper people, and when you don't get what you ask for, you have proof that you indeed asked. Now I have not seen the form, but according to the newspaper, the form asks what you want the documents for? Why is that there? The open records act does not require I tell them what I am going to do with them. Maybe I want some paper for my bird cage. The fact that the city clerk put that in the form, makes me wonder why she would care. Our council has no clue what to do. They are fine folks - and I have no doubt that they try their best. That being said - they have a city attorney that they should be asking questions of - and the city attorney should be giving them proper guidance. I do not know the city attorney - but I think we should all be questioning how our money is spent, and how our council behaves. I do not expect our councilors to know all of the rules, but I expect them to ask for guidance when they don't. I don't know all of the rules to running a city, but I know when I am clueless - and I know where to get the answers. Don't even ask me about our trash rates - didn't we just recently sign a new contract that cut our trash pickups down to weekly? Why the increase? What a joke.

I am thrilled someone is asking questions. I wish more people would attend the meetings. I really do.
On a personal level if more people attended the meetings more people would be able to speak up and say what I am reporting is what happened, and not my opinion.
You and I had a conversation about the person who was speaking at the meetings. But this is not the only person speaking. He just seems to be the one the citizens in attendance have elected spokesperson of the group.
others speak but often only to back up what has already been said, (no new quotes) or under their breath, which is hard to get a complete quote. These people are good honest people but often they are so emotional or they just cant speak well in public. I am not in anyway mocking them.
But questions need to be asked.
I have no problem signing a paper to request records. I have done that with other cities. But there should be no reason we would have to tell why we want them. Or be treated like a villian when we ask for them.
But I have a real problem with the public not being allowed to speak. I dont speak at meetings, well I did tell them in Sept. that my trash service was horrible and that I knew Yale was also having terrible service from the same company. But that is all I have ever said at a meeting. But anyone should have the right to speak, in a controlled, respectful manner,at the appropriate time. It just seems odd to go from letting the public speak anytime to not at all.
Only when people start showing up for the meetings will they see for themselves what is going on. Until then its easy to sick back on their laurels and say the newspaper publisher has it out for the city governement.
I get letters and calls daily from people who want me to print this or that about city hall. I dont print it because its rumor. But when I print facts they are facts.
Those facts have a habit of changing from month to month, but they are the facts as of publication. To the best of my understanding of what I am seeing and hearing. If I make a mistake it is certainly not intended. I love Oilton. Thats why I put the paper here.
I hope this will open up dialog and get people interested in their city government. I believe the council and the mayor are good people. But even good people make mistakes. I think they are sometimes in over their heads. But as you said that is what the attorney is suppose to be for. But he doesnt show up at meetings.
I will say the council (at the Septemeber meeting) did not want to increase the trash rates, most didnt want to increase any rates. but the trash company is charging more, supposedly because of the cost of fuel. It was my understand the mayor was looking into why once the fuel prices went down drastically they were being charged for high fuel prices.
It was also said that we are under contract to the trash company and that they were within their rights to raise the bill to the city. None of the council members had read the contract. That is what they said. I am sure I will again be accused of lying by someone but that is what they said.
All I can say is elections are coming up. That and go to the meetings.

I do know that often times a company increases their rates after fuel or other charges go up drastically. My concern about that is the contract was signed when fuel prices were at their highest - and now they have fallen dramatically. Since that is the case - why the increase? The fact that the council members did not read the contract does concern me. I can imagine there is a lot of legalese, but I would have read the majority of it before I voted on it. Maybe I am nuts - but I am binding the citizens I represent to a long term service. I don't feel like the newspaper has it out for the council - I think the newspaper is reporting what it sees. Not a problem there. I will agree that I think the council is full of nice people - and I would imagine that anybody would need support, there are too many legal hurdles involved today. That being said - why would the council even have a meeting without the attorney there? That shows a real lack of thought on their part. Maybe it shows a lack of something else - I don't know. I am hoping we see some new blood when the elections come about. I just hope that the people that run - run because they want to make a difference, and not because they have an axe to grind. I do not want to see folks with negative attitudes running our town. This community has a lot to offer - I don't want to see that buried under vendettas and hate. Hopefully some other folks weigh in on these thoughts.

I agree that people need a place to post their thoughts. When I added the forum I was worried it might get out of hand - but it has been great so far. I have some people that help moderate it - to make sure that it doesn't. I hope the board grows - and am sure it will. I am afraid that some people think they have to be a MagicWISP customer to join - that is not a requirement. The only thing required is a valid e-mail address, no matter who it comes from. I suppose I should find some way to tell folks about the board - but they normally have a life of their own, and will come about one person at a time. As people learn about the board - they will visit. So everybody go out and tell a few people - and others will visit and start to post!!! The board is for the entire area - someday I hope to see folks from Oilton, Olive, Drumright, Yale, Cushing, and Jennings posting their thoughts. Not to mention - free advertising for their garage sales.
